The Battle of Prairie D'Ane is also known as the Skirmish at Prairie D'Ane, Battle of Gum Springs or Battle of Moscow. The engagement lasted from April 9 to April 13, 1864. The Nevada County Depot Museum acquired 800 acres of this historic site and opened it to the public for tours and outdoor activities. In addition to special reenactments and living history programs, the public can enjoy fishing ponds, miles of walking trails, and visitor amenities such as picnic tables and off-grid toilets.

The Nevada County Depot & Museum owns and manages a large portion of historic Prairie D'Ane, the site of an April 1864 engagement between Union and Confederate forces. This engagement was the beginning of the Red River Campaign, later called the Camden Expedition, a push by Union forces to capture Southern Arkansas and continue to Shreveport, Louisiana. The Battle at Prairie D'Ane redirected this campaign and Union troops instead marched on and captured Camden, Arkansas. Today, the site hosts reenactments, living history encampments, and other heritage activities. For a list of upcoming reenactments and public events, contact The Nevada County Depot Museum or find us on Facebook.

Natural Beauty

Prairie D'Ane Battlefield preserves 800+ acres of natural prairie. Historically used as a hunting ground and meeting place by the first occupants of this area, the Caddo and the Quapaw, it was later prime grazing and farm land. Today, the Nevada County Depot Museum is restoring and preserving this natural site for the public. Join us in late March and Early April for the Monarch Butterfly migration; take a stroll along new paths for a day of bird watching; or fish in one of the sites ponds. We offer RV camping and a picnic pavilion as well as off-grid toilets on site.
