John D. Davis was born July 27, 1816, in Tennessee to Andrew Davis and his wife, Mary Orton Davis of North and South Carolina respectively. Andrew Davis was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

 

John D. Davis lived for a while in Monroe County, Mississippi; also, Tippah County, coming to Nevada County, Arkansas in the year 1870 where he became a prosperous farmer. He married Margaret Miller in Tippah County Mississippi in 1847. She was born in Georgia in 1824.

 

They had eight children: John D.; Mary C.; Lucinda Ann*; J, Melville; Virgil E.; James W.; Robert W.; Elizabeth; Mary.

 

*Lucinda Ann Davis married Benjamin F. Steele in 1880. She died March 15, 1928, buried in Moscow Cemetery near Prescott, Arkansas. They had seven children.
