Dr. Gilbert Austin Buchanan
Dr. Gilbert Austin Buchanan was born in Nevada County, Arkansas on February 19, 1884 to Mr. and Mrs. Chesley M. Buchanan, and died at his home near Prescott, Arkansas on the evening of September 12, 1932.
Doctor Buchanan received his early education in the public schools of Prescott, graduating with the High School class of 1905; he entered the medical department of the University of Arkansas in the fall of 1906, graduating from that institution with the class of 1911, receiving his M.D. degree. From 1908 until 1911, he was assistant city physician of Little Rock and served his internship in the City Hospital of that City, remaining in that hospital three months after his graduation.
Returning to Prescott, he formed a partnership with his brother, Dr. A.S. Buchanan which continued until his untimely death. He was also associated with his brother in the operation of the Buchanan Drug Store and the Cora Donnell Hospital, Prescott's first hospital. In 1914, Dr. Buchanan was married to Miss Florine Warrick, daughter of Paul Ottis Warrick and his first wife, Francis (Simmons) Warrick. Florine was born in Bonham, Texas, July 30, 1891. At the time of her marriage, the family home was at Van Buren, Arkansas. She was teacher in the Prescott High School. To this union were born three children: Paul Ottis, Clara Francis, and Donnell.

For several years, Dr. Buchanan was City Physician of Prescott, a member and president of the local school board, and for many years was an officer in the Nevada County Medical Society. He also held membership in the American Medical Association, and the Arkansas State Medical Society. During his college days, he was affiliated with the Chi Zeta Chi National Greek letter fraternity. He held membership in Prescott Lodge No. 80 Free and Accepted Masons, Prescott Chapter No. 38 Royal Arch Masons, Ascalon Commandery Knight Templars, Nevada Lodge No. 203; Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, and the Woodmen of the World. He was affiliated with the First Methodist Church and for several years was a member of the Board of Stewards of that church. Dr. Buchanan was a representative member of the Medical Profession in Arkansas and enjoyed the confidence and respect of not only the public but his professional brethren as well.
